Our Work

The Nunavut Cultural Heritage Society supports initiatives that combine Inuit arts and culture with Inuktut literacy and language learning.

In 2020, NCHS partnered with the Nunavut Bilingual Education Society to distribute kits containing Inuktitut language materials including books, a CD, DVD, and activity book to children age 0-10 in the care of Family Services Nunavut.

NCHS’s portion of the Piliriqatigiingniq Iliqqusiqtigut Uqausiqtigullu: Connecting through Culture and Language project is supported by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and Community Foundations of Canada and Department of Family Services Nunavut.

In 2019, NCHS partnered with the Nunavut Bilingual Education Society to develop Ilinniarutit!TV, an online webchannel to aid preschool-aged children in Inuktitut language development.

Exploring Language Nuances in Taloyoak, Nunavut

In 2023, NCHS traveled to Taloyoak to gather interviews exploring the unique language nuances found within the community. On a local, regional and national level, the need to revitalize this dialect is urgent, as the language is being overtaken by other dialects of Inuktitut and English. This community-driven project has provided an invaluable opportunity for Netsilik Inuit to revitalize and maintain their Indigenous language.
